1. India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant chairs inter-ministerial meeting to review G20 preparations

India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on 24 September 2022 chaired an inter-ministerial meeting with the chairpersons of all Working Groups under India’s upcoming G20 Presidency and discussed substantive and logistical aspects of the preparations for it.

This year, the G20 Summit will be hosted by Indonesia in Bali in the month of November. India will assume the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to 30 November 2023.

G 20 Sherpa and its work 

The Government of India appointed former NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant as the Sherpa of G-20 in July this year.  He will be responsible for conducting and coordinating the Sherpa track meetings of the forthcoming G-20 Summit to be hosted by India.

With the G-20 presidency coming to India in November 2022, India will set the agenda of G-20 for the year, identify the themes and focus areas, conduct discussions and work out outcome documents.  To prepare for this the G20 process has been divided into the Sherpa track and the Finance track

Sherpa Track 

Under the Sherpa track, about 100 official meetings are expected to be organized in the areas of employment, health, digital economy, trade, investment & industry, environment & climate, energy, anti-corruption, agriculture, tourism, culture, and socio-economic development, education, and women empowerment.

Finance Track 

Under the Finance track, about 40 meetings are expected to be organized including those in the areas of international financial architecture, financial inclusion and sustainable finance, financing for infrastructure, climate finance and tax matters.

G-20 is a group of 19 countries and the European Union.

2. Himachal Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur inaugurates National Conference of tourism ministers

The Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur inaugurated a three-day (18-20 September) national conference of tourism ministers from various states and Union territories at Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh on 18 September 2022.

  • Union Minister for Culture and Tourism G Kishan Reddy was the Chief Guest.
  • The conference in Dharamshala is being attended by tourism ministers from various states and Union Territories and other officials related to the tourism sectors.
  • With India assuming the Presidency of the G20 for one year from December 1, 2022, to November 30, 2023, Tourism-related aspects of the G20 leaders' summit will be discussed at the event. 
  • India is expected to host over 200 G20 meetings during its year-long Presidency of the influential group, which will culminate with an annual summit on September 9 and 10 next year.

3. Bhupendra Yadav advocates improving the conditions workers at G20 Labour minister meeting

Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bhupender Yadav attended the G20 Labour and Employment Ministers’ meeting at Bali, Indonesia. The G-20 Labour and Employment Ministers meeting was held on 13-14 September 2022.

  • Speaking on the occasion the minister emphasized the need to focus on improving the employment conditions of the workers for a strong and resilient economic recovery.
  • Indonesia is currently the chairman of the G-20 group and it will host the G-20 summit meeting on 15-16 November 2022 at Bali, Indonesia. 
  • India will take over the chairmanship of G-20 from Indonesia at the Bali Summit.

4. India to invite Bangladesh and other friendly as guest country during its G-20 presidency

The Ministry of External Affairs on 13 September 2022, said that India will invite a number of friendly countries and International Organisation to the G-20 summit as Guest countries to the G-20 Summit meeting being hosted by India on 09 and 10 September 2023 in New Delhi.

  • India will invite Bangladesh, Egypt, Mauritius, Netherlands, Nigeria, Oman, Singapore, Spain and UAE as Guest Countries. 

International Organisations to be invited :

  • India will invite the United Nations, International Monetary Fund(IMF),World Bank, World Health Organisation (WHO),World Trade Organization (WTO),International labour organization(ILO),Organisation of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Financial Stability Board(FSB), Head of African Union, International Solar Alliance ,Association of South-east Asian Nation(ASEAN) , African Union Development Agency (AUDA-NEPAD ) CDRI (Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure) and ADB (Asian Development Bank).
